wp media import <file> --skip-copy stores the path it is given. With a path relative to the current directory, e.g. from the WordPress root:

wp media import wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video.mp4 --skip-copy

_wp_attached_file becomes wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video.mp4. _wp_relative_upload_path() only strips the uploads base directory from absolute paths, so wp_get_attachment_url() returns .../wp-content/uploads/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video.mp4 and wp media regenerate can't find the file.

This resolves a relative local path with realpath() when --skip-copy is set, before it is stored. Absolute paths are unchanged.

Added a Behat scenario that imports a file from the uploads directory by relative path and checks _wp_attached_file and the attachment URL. It fails without the change (wp-content/uploads/codeispoetry.png instead of codeispoetry.png). Locally features/media-import.feature passes (30 scenarios, SQLite), as do phpcs and phpstan.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed relative file paths during local media imports with --skip-copy, so imported attachments use the resolved path when available. Absolute and unresolved paths remain unchanged.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0baf0

Imports through an uploads symlink to a file outside uploads can produce a broken attachment URL. The issue is limited to that case, so merge risk is low, but preserving the symlink path is advisable.

Preserve the uploads-relative path for symlinked imports.

realpath() resolves symbolic links. If a relative path under the uploads directory points through a symlink to a target outside that directory, lines 610–614 replace the uploads-visible path with the external target before wp_insert_attachment() stores it. The attachment URL can then fail to map to the symlink path.

When this occurs, pass the normalized absolute path of the original symlink location, not the realpath() target, so WordPress stores the correct uploads-relative path.

Patch Testing Report

Patch tested: #266 at 0baf0ee, compared with main at d182182

Environment

  • WordPress: 7.1.3
  • PHP: 8.5.9 (CLI, with GD)
  • Server: n/a (WP-CLI only)
  • Database: MariaDB 11.8.9
  • Browser: n/a (command line test)
  • OS: Alpine Linux 3.24.1 (Docker). I did not test on Windows.
  • Theme: Twenty Twenty-Five 1.5 (default)

  • Plugins: None
  • WP-CLI: 3.0.0-alpha from this repo's vendor/

Steps taken

  1. Imported each file below with --skip-copy, on main and on the PR. /site/wp is the WordPress root. "File" means get_attached_file() points to an existing file (this is what wp media regenerate uses; when it does not, regenerate fails with Warning: Can't find ...). "URL" means wp_get_attachment_url() points to the file under the uploads URL.

Row 8 is the same on both branches:

Warning: Unable to import file 'wp-content/uploads/2026/10/missing.jpg'. Reason: File doesn't exist.

  1. Ran the case from the description on main:

$ wp media regenerate 1 --yes
Found 1 image to regenerate.
Warning: Can't find "A field of amazing canola" (ID 1).
Error: No images regenerated (1 failed).
  1. With the PR, the same commands give 2026/10/rel.jpg, /site/wp/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/rel.jpg and Success: Regenerated 1 of 1 images.
  2. The new scenario fails on main at the _wp_attached_file step (wp-content/uploads/codeispoetry.png) and passes on the PR. features/media-import.feature on MariaDB 11.8: main 29 scenarios passed, the PR 30 passed. vendor/bin/phpcs src/Media_Command.php and composer phpstan: no errors on the PR.
  3. ✅ Patch is solving the problem: the case in the description and every plain relative path I tried (rows 1, 2, 4 to 6, 9 and 10) are stored relative to uploads, the file is found, regenerate works and the URL is right.
  4. ❌ Patch is failing: a relative path through a symlinked uploads directory (row 15), or to a symlinked file inside uploads (row 17), is stored as the resolved target path and the attachment URL breaks.

Expected result

  • With --skip-copy, a relative path gives the same result as the absolute path to the same file.

Additional Notes

  • Symlinks (rows 15 and 17). realpath() resolves the symlink, so the path no longer starts with the uploads basedir (/site/wp/wp-content/uploads). _wp_relative_upload_path() then leaves it absolute, and wp_get_attachment_url() builds baseurl . '/' . $file. The CodeRabbit comment about a symlinked file is valid (row 17). The same happens when the whole uploads directory is a symlink (row 15), a setup used to share uploads between deploy releases. Repro, from the WordPress root:

    $ mv wp-content/uploads /site/shared-uploads
    $ ln -s /site/shared-uploads wp-content/uploads
    $ cp /site/fixtures/canola.jpg wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sym.jpg
    $ wp media import wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sym.jpg --skip-copy --porcelain
    2
    $ wp post meta get 2 _wp_attached_file
    /site/shared-uploads/2026/10/sym.jpg
    $ wp eval 'echo wp_get_attachment_url( 2 );'
    http://media266.test/wp-content/uploads//site/shared-uploads/2026/10/sym.jpg

    On main the same import stores wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sym.jpg and the URL is http://media266.test/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sym.jpg. The absolute path /site/wp/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/sym.jpg stores 2026/10/sym.jpg on both branches.

  • Row 18 works with the PR, but it stores the full server path instead of 2026/10/rootlink.jpg, because realpath() follows the /site/current symlink.

  • The description. On WordPress 7.1.3, from the WordPress root, wp_get_attachment_url() on main already returns the right URL (row 1). Core has a back compat branch in wp_get_attachment_url() for stored paths that contain wp-content/uploads. What breaks is get_attached_file(), and with it wp media regenerate. The doubled /wp-content/uploads/uploads/... URL only shows up when the relative path does not contain wp-content/uploads (rows 2 and 10).

  • The URL step in the new scenario passes on main too. I ran the scenario on main without the _wp_attached_file step and it passed, so that step does not test the fix. A check on get_attached_file() fails on main (false) and passes on the PR (below).

  • The video path from the description (wp-content/uploads/2026/10/video.mp4) gives the same _wp_attached_file as row 1 on both branches. wp media regenerate says Warning: No images found. for it on both, because it only handles images and PDFs.

  • Rows 11 to 13: with the PR, a relative path outside uploads gives the same result as the absolute path to the same file, which looks right to me. Row 14 (a URL with --skip-copy stores the remote URL) is unchanged by this PR.

Support Content

  • Suggested change: resolve only the directory part, and when it is inside the real uploads directory, put the configured basedir back in front. I ran all 18 rows again with it. Rows 15, 17 and 18 now store 2026/10/sym.jpg, 2026/10/link.jpg and 2026/10/rootlink.jpg, with the file found and a working URL, the same as the absolute path. All other rows give the same result as the PR. features/media-import.feature with the change: 31 scenarios passed. phpcs and composer phpstan: no errors.

This step passes on main too, so it does not test the fix. A check on get_attached_file() fails on main (false) and passes with this PR:

realpath() also resolves symlinks, so with a symlinked uploads directory, or a symlinked file in uploads, this stores the target path and the URL breaks (rows 15 and 17 in my report). This line needs the get_absolute_path() helper from the suggested change in my report:

Suggested change
$absolute_file = realpath( $file );
if ( false !== $absolute_file ) {
$file = $absolute_file;
}
$file = $this->get_absolute_path( $file );
